About me

My name is Ken Conley, and I have spent more than 40 years learning, building, repairing, and improving homes through hands-on DIY projects.

This website was created to help homeowners gain confidence with home improvement projects. My goal is to share practical tips, real experiences, and lessons learned over decades of DIY work.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced homeowner, I hope this site helps you tackle projects with confidence.

Where My DIY Journey Began

My DIY journey started in a junior high school woodworking shop class during the 1970s.

That class introduced me to woodworking, craftsmanship, and tool safety. It also taught me patience and precision.

  • A cutting board
  • A serving tray
  • A bookshelf
  • A step stool
  • A nightstand for my parents’ bedroom

Those early projects helped build the foundation for a lifetime of home improvement work.

I quickly learned an important lesson:

Measure twice and cut once.

That simple principle still guides my work today.

Education and Military Experience

As my interest in building grew, I continued developing my technical skills.

I later majored in Mechanical Engineering Technology. During college, I studied mechanical drawing, blueprint reading, and construction planning.

I also served as an Army officer for 24 years.

During my military career, I participated in renovation, remodeling, and beautification projects on military installations. Those experiences helped strengthen my project planning and problem-solving skills.

They also reinforced the importance of discipline, safety, and attention to detail.

Building and Improving My Own Home

After purchasing my home, DIY became more than a hobby.

It became a passion.

Over the years, I completed many indoor and outdoor home improvement projects, including:

  • Decks
  • Patios
  • Landscaping
  • A pergola
  • A wooden bridge
  • An above-ground pool deck
  • A putting green
  • A finished basement
  • Painting and remodeling projects

Each project taught me something new.

Some projects were challenging. Others required creativity and patience. Every project helped build experience and confidence.

Teaching DIY Skills to My Family

One of the most rewarding parts of DIY has been sharing those experiences with my family.

I involved my sons in projects when they were young. Together, we painted our garage and worked on various home improvement tasks over the years.

DIY projects are about more than tools and materials.

They help teach:

  • Responsibility
  • Patience
  • Problem-solving
  • Work ethic
  • Confidence

Most importantly, they help create lasting memories.

Why I Created This Website

I created Conley’s Home Improvement to help homeowners learn practical DIY skills.

This website shares:

  • DIY project ideas
  • Home improvement tips
  • Painting advice
  • Tool recommendations
  • Renovation lessons
  • Budget-friendly solutions
  • Real project experiences

My goal is to make DIY less intimidating and more achievable for everyday homeowners.

You do not need to be a professional contractor to improve your home.

You simply need the willingness to learn and the confidence to get started.

My DIY Philosophy

I believe good craftsmanship comes from:

  • Patience
  • Preparation
  • Safety
  • Consistency
  • Attention to detail

DIY is not about perfection.

It is about learning, improving, and taking pride in the work you do with your own hands.

Over time, small projects build valuable skills and confidence.
