Latex paint will store indefinitely, provided you meet two conditions:
First, don’t let it freeze. Second, seal it in an airtight container.
You can meet the first condition by storing the paint in a warm, dry location.
To meet the second, either transfer the remaining paint to a new container or clean the rim of all hardened paint that might interfere with the seal.
Even in an airtight container, some air is left inside; the top layer of paint may dry, forming a “skin.” Storing latex paint cans upside down keeps skinning to an absolute minimum and prevents rust from forming on the lip. When you’re ready to open the can, turn it over, and the now-hardened skin will stay on the bottom of the can.
Storing paint
1. Transfer unused paint to a smaller can. If there is less than I quart of paint left, transfer it to a new quarl-size can (sold in paint stores)

2. Remove paint from the rim.
If you keep the original can, remove all paint inside the rim with a small screwdriver wrapped in cloth

3. Tap the lid down until it’s secure. Use a block of wood and a hammer to make sure it’s down.

4. Dab paint on the lid. This will help you identify the color later.

5. Write on the lid, using a permanent marker. Include the color, type of paint, and perhaps the date and the room painted in that color.

Disposing of paint and solvents
I’s against the law to toss out liquid paints and solvents with the trash. If you have a lot, donate it to a nonprofit organization, such as Habitat for Humanity. Otherwise you must let the paint evaporate and solidity and dispose of it in a manner recommended by your local waste management authority. (See page 68 for more information, or call 800-CLEANUP for information on disposal regulations.) Find a safe place to leave the open cans (not in the house or an enclosed space, and never in a room with a water heater or furnace); leave the lids off until the contents solidily. Speed up evaporation by adding paint hardener, vermiculite, or cat litter to the cans.
To dispose of old latex paint, mix it with paint hardener or vemiculite; let it solidify, and take it to the dump.

Place solvent rags in a can, fill the can with water, seal it, and call your waste management authority to inquire about how to dispose of it.
