General breakdown of home improvement skill levels

This is a great way to think about home improvement tasks, as it helps you decide what you can realistically handle yourself and when it’s best to call a professional. Here is a general breakdown of home improvement skill levels using a 1-to-5 Level rating system.

1 -🔘 – Beginner-Friendly

2-🔘🔘 – Intermediate

3-🔘🔘🔘- Advance DIYer

4-🔘🔘🔘🔘- Expert DIYer

5-🔘🔘🔘🔘🔘- Pro Level

1 -🔘: Beginner-Friendly

These projects require minimal prior experience, basic tools, and are generally low-risk. They’re perfect for building confidence and getting familiar with simple home maintenance.

  • Examples:
    • Interior painting (a single room)
    • Replacing cabinet hardware (knobs and pulls)
    • Unclogging a sink or toilet with a plunger
    • Replacing an old light fixture (after turning off the power)
    • Assembling furniture
    • Patching small holes in drywall
    • Cleaning gutters
    • Landscaping (planting flowers, mulching)

2-🔘🔘 – Intermediate

These projects involve more tools and a basic understanding of a particular system (like plumbing or electrical). They may require a bit of research and can take a day or two to complete. The risk of costly mistakes is higher, but still manageable.

  • Examples:
    • Installing vinyl plank flooring
    • Installing a new sink faucet
    • Installing a new toilet
    • Tiling a small area, like a backsplash
    • Building basic floating shelves
    • Replacing a bathroom fan
    • Refinishing a piece of furniture

3-🔘🔘🔘- Advance DIYer

These projects require a solid set of tools, specific skills, and a deeper understanding of building principles. They can be physically demanding, may require working with building codes, and have a higher potential for safety hazards or expensive mistakes if not done correctly.

  • Examples:
    • Installing a new pre-hung door
    • Framing an interior, non-load-bearing wall
    • Installing new hardwood or tile flooring in a large room
    • Replacing a kitchen countertop
    • Installing a garbage disposal
    • Extensive drywall repair
    • Installing new baseboards and trim

4-🔘🔘🔘🔘- Expert DIYer

At this level, you’re venturing into projects that require specialized knowledge, a significant time commitment, and a high level of precision. Mistakes can be very costly and may impact the structural integrity or safety of your home. It’s often at this point that many homeowners opt to hire a professional.

  • Examples:
    • Major electrical work (e.g., running new circuits, installing a subpanel)
    • Replacing a shower or bathtub enclosure
    • Installing new windows
    • Refinishing an entire basement
    • Replacing an exterior door
    • Roof repair or replacement

5-🔘🔘🔘🔘🔘- Pro Level

These are tasks that should almost always be left to licensed and insured professionals. They involve significant safety risks, potential for catastrophic failure, and require specialized tools, certifications, and knowledge of complex building codes.

  • Examples:
    • Any major structural work (removing a load-bearing wall, foundation repair)
    • Replacing a furnace, water heater, or other HVAC systems
    • Gas line installation or repair
    • Building a deck or porch from scratch
    • Full kitchen or bathroom remodels (involving plumbing and electrical)
    • Major roof installation
