Painting interior concrete

1. Test for moisture in or under the concrete by taping a 4×4′ poly sheet over the floor for at least 24 hours. If you see condensation or moisture under the sheet, there is too much moisture seeping through the concrete. Leave the surface unpainted; the moisture will make the paint blister If the sheet is dry, proceed to Step 2.

    2. Spray the concrete slab with water. If the water beads, scrub with a TSP solution (see page 24) to remove any grease; then rinse and test again. If the water still beads, then scrub with a degreaser/ concrete cleaner.

When the concrete is clean, etch it with a solution recommended by the manufacturer of your chosen paint Follow all safety recommendations carefully; the etching liquid is caustic.

Rinse each step thoroughly. Cleaners may react with the paint or interfere with paint adhesion.

    3. Apply a concrete paint using a 9 inch roller with a ⅜-inch nap. Let the paint dry and apply the second coat. As with any floor painting project, don’t paint yourself into a corner.

Plan ahead so that you end painting the area right in front of the door, allowing you to step out of the room.
